THE PRINCIPALITY OF LIECHTENSTEIN
Fürstentum Liechtenstein

The Principality of Liechtenstein (pronounced /ˈlɪktənstaɪn/ German: Fürstentum
Liechtenstein, correct-German-pronunciation-of-Fuerstentum-Liechtenstein.ogg
ˈfʏɐstəntuːm ˈliːçtənʃtaɪn (help·info)) is a doubly landlocked alpine microstate in
Western Europe, bordered by Switzerland to the west and south and by Austria
to the east. Its area is just over 160 km² (about 61.7 square miles) and it has
an estimated population of 35,000, Liechtensteins capital is Vaduz.

File:ViewFromVaduzCastle.jpg

Liechtenstein is the smallest German-speaking country in the world, and
the only alpine country to lie entirely within the Alps. It is also the only
German-speaking country not to share a common frontier with Germany.
it is a constitutional monarchy divided into 11 municipalities. Liechtenstein's
terrain is mountainous, making it a winter sports destination. Many cultivated
fields and small farms characterize its landscape both in the north (Unterland,
lower land) and in the south (Oberland, upper land). The country has a strong
financial sector located in the capital, Vaduz, and has been identified as a
tax haven. It is a member of the European Free Trade Association but not of
the European Union. The Principality of Liechtenstein is the richest country
in the world on a per-capita basis.

The House of Liechtenstein

The Liechtenstein dynasty, from which the principality takes its name (rather than vice-versa),
is the family which reigns by constitutional, hereditary right over the nation of Liechtenstein.
Only dynastic members of the House of Liechtenstein are eligible to inherit the throne, and the
dynasty's membership, rights and responsibilities are defined by a law of the family, which is
enforced by the reigning Prince and may be altered by vote among the family's dynasts, but
which may not be altered by the government or parliament of Liechtenstein.

  File:Regierungsgebäude Vaduz, Liechtenstein.jpg

The family comes from Castle Liechtenstein in Lower Austria, which the family possessed from
at least 1140 to the 13th century, and from 1807 onwards. Through the centuries, the dynasty
acquired vast swathes of land, predominantly in Moravia, Lower Austria, Silesia and Styria,
though in all cases, these territories were held in fief under other more senior feudal lords,
particularly under various lines of the Habsburg family, to whom several Liechtenstein princes
served as close advisors. Thus, and without any territory held directly under the Imperial
throne, the Liechtenstein dynasty was unable to meet a primary requirement to qualify for a
seat in the Imperial diet, the Reichstag.

  File:Valtice castle.jpg

The family yearned greatly for the added power which a seat in the Imperial government would
garner, and therefore searched for lands to acquire which would be unmittelbar or held without
any feudal personage other than the Holy Roman Emperor himself having rights on the land. After
some time, the family was able to arrange the purchase of the minuscule Herrschaft ("Lordship")
of Schellenberg and county of Vaduz (in 1699 and 1712 respectively) from the Hohenems family.
Tiny Schellenberg and Vaduz possessed exactly the political status required, no feudal lord
other than their comital sovereign and the suzerain Emperor.

 File:Liechtenstein coa.png File:Johann I v Liechtenstein.jpg File:Liechtenstein coa.png

Thereby, on January 23, 1719, after purchase had been duly made, Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor
decreed Vaduz and Schellenberg were united, and raised to the dignity of Fürstentum(principality)
with the name "Liechtenstein" in honour of "[his] true servant, Anton Florian of Liechtenstein".
It is on this date that Liechtenstein became a sovereign member state of the Holy Roman Empire.
Ironically, but as testament to the pure political expediency of the purchases, the Princes of
Liechtenstein did not set foot in their new principality for several decades. This article shows
the descendants of Franz Joseph II, Prince of Liechtenstein, the father of the present (2006)
Head of State, Prince Hans-Adam II.

The Genealogy of The Princely House

 File:Liechtenstein coa.png File:Prince Karl I of Liechtenstein.jpg File:Liechtenstein coa.png

Karl I, Prince of Liechtenstein (30 July 1569 - 12 February 1627) was the
first Liechtenstein to become the 1st Prince of Liechtenstein, thus he was
the founder of the Princely Family of Liechtenstein.

Karl was the elder son of Hartmann II, Prince of Liechtenstein (1544-1585)
and his wife Anna Maria of Ortenburg (1547-1601). Emperor Rudolf II of the
Holy Roman Empire appointed Karl to Chief Intendant, an important position
at his court. Karl held this position until 1607. In a dispute over land
between the Emperor and heir to the throne, Archduke Mathias, Karl sided
with Mathias who made Karl a hereditary prince in thanks for Karl's aid,
in 1608. In 1614 Karl joined the regency of the Duchy of Troppau to his
possessions. In thanks for further aid at the Battle of White Mountain,
Karl was appointed to the positions of proconsul and vice-regent of Bohemia
in 1622 and was bestowed with the Order of the Golden Fleece. He also gained
the Silesian Duchy of Jägerndorf and much confiscated "rebel property",
and he commissioned the Liechtenstein dukedom.

 File:Liechtenstein coa.png http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Karl_Eusebius_v_Liechtenstein.jpg File:Liechtenstein coa.png

Karl Eusebius, Prince of Liechtenstein (September 12, 1611 - April 5,
1684) was the 2nd Prince of Liechtenstein. He inherited this title
in 1627 from his father Karl I. He was 16 and thus considered underage
and his uncles Prince Gundakar and Maximillian acted as regents until
1632. From 1639 to 1641 Karl was Chief Captain of High and Low Silesia.

File:Liechtenstein coa.png File:Anton Florian von Liechtenstein.jpg File:Liechtenstein coa.png

Anton Florian, Prince of Liechtenstein (28 May 1656 - 11 October 1721) was
the 5th Prince of Liechtenstein between 1718 and 1721. He was born in
Wilfersdorf, in what is now Upper Austria. During the War of the Spanish
Succession, he went to Spain, where he was the Chief Intendant and Prime
Minster of the Archduke Karl, who became Emperor Charles VI after the sudden
death of his brother in 1711. Florian returned to Vienna for Charles's
coronation. He was the Imperial Chief Intendant and Chairman of the Secret
Council until he died in 1721. In 1719, Charles VI created the new principality
of Liechtenstein from the domains of Schellenberg and Vaduz, which were both
held by the Liechtenstein family. This was done so that Anton Florian could
be admitted to the Reichstag, which required that all members had land that
was subordinate only to the Emperor himself (as opposed to land held in fief
by higher nobles). Thus, Anton Florian became the first Prince of Liechtenstein.
It and Luxembourg are the only states of the Holy Roman Empire that still exist.

 File:Liechtenstein coa.png File:Josef Johann Adam von Liechtenstein.jpg File:Liechtenstein coa.png

Johann Josef Adam, Prince of Liechtenstein (25 May 1690 - 16 December 1732 Valtice)
was the 6th Prince of Liechtenstein from 1721 to his death. Born in Vienna, he was
the only living son of Anton Florian, Prince of Liechtenstein. Johann Josef Adam
served under his father for a short time during the War of the Spanish Succession
and later fought against the French under the Duke of Marlborough. After the Treaty
of Utrecht he became Imperial Privy Counsellor in Vienna.

 File:Liechtenstein coa.png File:Johann Nepomuk Karl v Liechtenstein.jpg File:Liechtenstein coa.png

Johann Nepomuk Karl, Prince of Liechtenstein (Full name: Johann Nepomuk Karl
Borromäus Joseph Franz de Paula) (6 July 1724 - 22 December 1748) was the 7th
Prince of Liechtenstein between 1732 and 1748. He was the son of Johann Josef
Anton. When his father died, Johann Nepomuk Karl was only eight and his
relative Josef Wenzel ruled as regent. Nepomuk Karl came of age in 1745 and
thus took control of Liechtenstein's affairs. In 1744 he had married Maria
Josephina von Harrach, (20 November 1727 - 15 February 1788), daughter of
Count Friedrich August von Harrach-Rohrau. The couple had two daughters;
Marianne (1745-1752) and Maria Antonia (13 June 1749 - 28 May 1813) Johann
Nepomuk died three years later at the age of 24 leaving no male descendants.

 File:Liechtenstein coa.png File:Joseph Wenzel von Liechtenstein.jpg File:Liechtenstein coa.png

Joseph Wenzel I Karl, Prince of Liechtenstein (August 9, 1696 -
February 10, 1772) was the 4th Prince of Liechtenstein between
1712 and 1718, 1732 and 1745, and 1748 and 1772. Born at Prague,
Joseph Wenzel was the eldest son of Prince Philip  Erasmus
of Liechtenstein (11 September 1664-13 January 1704) and
Christina Theresa von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort (12
October 1665-14 April 1730) He was a nephew of Anton Florian.
