THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE
Royaume de France

The monarchs of France ruled, first as kings and later as emperors
(the Bonapartes only), from the Middle Ages to 1870. There is some
disagreement as to when France came into existence. The earliest
possible date would be the establishment of the Merovingian
Frankish kingdom by Clovis I in 486 with the defeat of Syagrius,
the last Roman official in Gaul. That kingdom's rulers were deposed
in the 8th century. The Treaty of Verdun established the Kingdom
of Western Francia in 843.

File:State flag of the Kingdom of France.svg

The Kings of England and Great Britain from 1340-1360 and 1369-1801
also claimed the title of King of France. For a short time, this had
some basis in fact - under the terms of the 1420 Treaty of Troyes,
Charles VI had recognized his son-in-law Henry V of England as regent
and heir. Henry V predeceased Charles VI and so Henry V's son, Henry
VI, succeeded his grandfather Charles VI as King of France. Most of
Northern France was under English control until 1435, but by 1453, the
English had been expelled from all of France save Calais (and the
Channel Islands), and Calais itself fell in 1558. Nevertheless, English
and then British monarchs continued to claim the title for themselves
until the creation of the United Kingdom in 1801. Various English kings
between 1337 and 1422 had also claimed the title of King of France,
but only intermittently.

The title "King of the Franks" (Latin: Rex Francorum) remained in use
until the reign of Philip IV. During the brief period when the French
Constitution of 1791 was in effect (1791-1792) and after the July
Revolution in 1830, the style "King of the French" was used instead
of "King of France (and Navarre)". It was a constitutional innovation
known as popular monarchy which linked the monarch's title to the
people, not to the territory of France.

The Royal House of Capet de Bourbon

The House of Bourbon is an important European royal house, a branch of
the Capetian dynasty. Bourbon kings first ruled Navarre and France in
the 16th century. By the 18th century, members of the Bourbon dynasty
also held thrones in Spain, Naples & Sicily, and Parma. Spain and
Luxembourg currently have Bourbon monarchs. Bourbon monarchs ruled
Navarre (from 1555) and France (from 1589) until the 1792 overthrow of
the monarchy during the French Revolution. Restored briefly in 1814
and definitively in 1815 after the fall of the First French Empire,
the senior line of the Bourbons was finally overthrown in the July
Revolution of 1830. A cadet branch, the House of Orléans, then ruled
for 18 years (1830-1848), until it too was overthrown. The Princes
of Condé (Bourbon-Condé) were a cadet branch of the Bourbon-Vendômes
and in turn, were senior to the Princes of Conti (Bourbon-Conti).
Both these lines became extinct in the early nineteenth century.

Philip V of Spain was the first Bourbon ruler of Spain, from 1700. The
Spanish Bourbons (in Spain the name is spelled Borbón and rendered
into English as Borbon have been overthrown and restored several times,
reigning 1700-1808, 1813-1868, 1875-1931, and 1975 to the present day.
From this Spanish line comes the royal line of the kingdom of the Two
Sicilies (1734-1806 and 1815-1860, and Sicily only in 1806-1816), the
Bourbon-Sicilies family, and the Bourbon rulers of the Duchy of Parma.

Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg married a cadet of the Bourbon-
Parma line, and thus her successors, who have ruled Luxembourg since
her abdication in 1964, have also technically been members of the House
of Bourbon. The declared heiress and thrice-regent of the now-defunct
Empire of Brazil married twenty years before their deposition a prince
of Orleans, and their descent, known as the Orleans-Braganza, would
have ascended that throne, had the empire not ended in 1889. The House
of Bourbon was originally a noble family, dating at least from the
beginning of the 13th century, when the estate of Bourbon was ruled by
a Lord who was a vassal of the King of France.

In 1268, Robert, Count of Clermont, sixth son of King Louis IX of France
married Beatrix of Bourbon, heiress to the lordship of Bourbon. Their
son Louis was made Duke of Bourbon in 1327. His descendant, the Constable
of France Charles de Bourbon, was the last of the Bourbon line when he
died in 1527. Because he chose to fight under the banner of Holy Roman
Emperor Charles V and lead a life of exile his title was discontinued
after his death. However the junior line of La Marche-Vendôme remained,
the ruling house of the Dukedom of Vendôme. The Bourbon-Vendôme branch
were to become rulers of the Kingdom of Navarre on the northern side of
the Pyrenees in 1555 and then of France, with Henry III of Navarre
becoming Henry IV of France

The Headship of The Royal House of France

The headship of the Royal House of France is an interesting question.
Leaving aside the dilemma caused by the Bonaparte claimant, who is
clearly an heir to hereditary monarchs of two separate French Empires,
the question of who is heir to the claim of the House of Capet, which ruled
France for half the Christian era, is the subject of great dispute.

Probably the majority of French monarchists support the claims of the
Orléanist line, headed by Henri, Comte de Paris, de jure Henry VII
of France, who has assumed the title "Duc de France". He is clearly the
heir of Louis Philippe, King of the French, who ruled from 1830 to 1848.
He is also the heir to the legitimist line of the House of Capet if the
renunciation of King Felipe V of Spain to the French throne was valid.
Eminent and learned scholars have argued that no such resignation was
valid and that thus King Felipe's heir male inherited the Legitimist
claim on the death of Henri V, so long, at least, as the claim is not united
to another throne. The heir male of King Felipe is Don Luis Alfonso de
Borbón, Duke of Anjou, de jure Louis XX of France.

Roi Très-chrétien)

* Orleanist: "X, by the Grace of God and by the constitutional
law of the State, King of the French." (X, Par la grâce de Dieu

The Family Titles and Styles

Members of the Royal House bear the Titles of Prince or Princess
of France and or Prince or Princess of Bourbon-Orleans for the House
of Orleans with the formal qualification of Royal Highness, Some
members of the Royal House also bear differing Titles granted
by the Present Heads of the Royal House of France
