 THE DUCAL HOUSE OF BERWICK
House of Fitzjames

The title Duke of Berwick, referring to the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed in England by the border with Scotland, was created in 1687 for James FitzJames, the illegitimate son of King James II and Arabella Churchill. The title, and its subsidiary titles (Baron of Bosworth and Earl of Tinmouth) are generally considered to have been forfeit in 1695 when the Duke was attainted following the enforced exile of his natural father. However, some have argued that the forfeiture was never properly carried out, and that the title thus remains extant, in the hands of the Spanish Duque de Peñaranda.

James FitzJames, 1st Duke of Berwick (21 August 1670 - 12 June 1734) was a French military leader, illegitimate son of King James II of England by Arabella Churchill, sister of the 1st Duke of Marlborough. In 1695 he married Honora De Burgh or De Burgo, the daughter of William Bourke, 7th Earl of Clanricarde and the widow of the 1st Earl of Lucan, who died in 1698. His second marriage, with Anne Bulkeley, daughter of Henry Bulkeley, took place in 1700.

The House of Fitzjames

The House of FitzJames (or the House of FitzJames-Stuart) is a noble house of British-origin founded by James FitzJames, 1st Duke of Berwick who was the illegitimate son of James II & VII, King of England, Scotland and Ireland, a Catholic monarch from the House of Stuart. After the Revolution of 1688, the Duke of Berwick followed his father into exile and much of their history since then has been in Spain and France, with several members of the house serving in a military capacity.

There became two lines of the house; the most senior carrying the title Duke of Berwick and residing in Spain, is the result of the 1st Duke of Berwick's marriage to Irishwoman, Honora Burke. This line has collected many titles throughout their history and has had some activity as ambassadors, military generals and has produced a few Grandees of Spain. The line associated with France, derived from the 1st Duke of Berwick's second marriage to Englishwoman, Anne Bulkeley carried the title Duke of FitzJames.

Perhaps the best known of the France associated line was Edward FitzJames, 5th Duke of FitzJames. An émigré who escaped to Italy after the French Revolution, he was later to return around the time of the Bourbon Restoration and was involved in ultraroyalist politics. This line died out in 1967 with the death of James FitzJames, 9th Duke of FitzJames. The senior line in Spain continues on to the present day where the head is currently Jacobo FitzJames-Stuart y Gomez, 12th Duke of Berwick.

THE PRINCELY HOUSE OF BISMARCK

The members of this family bear the title
Graf or Gräfin von Bismarck-Schönhausen.

Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck (1 April 1815 - 30 July 1898) was a Prussian - German statesman of the late 19th century, and a dominant figure in world affairs. As Ministerpräsident, or Prime Minister, of Prussia from 1862-1890, he oversaw the unification of Germany. In 1867 he became Chancellor of the North German Confederation. He designed the German Empire in 1871, becoming its first Chancellor and dominating its affairs until his dismissal in 1890. His diplomacy of Realpolitik and powerful rule gained him the nickname "The Iron Chancellor".
After his death German nationalists made Bismarck their hero, building hundreds of monuments glorifying the symbol of powerful personal leadership. Historians praised him as a statesman of moderation and balance who was primarily responsible for the unification of the German states into a nation-state. He used balance-of-power diplomacy to keep Europe peaceful in the 1870s and 1880s. He created a new nation with a progressive social policy, a result that went beyond his initial goals as a practitioner of power politics in Prussia. Bismarck, a devout Lutheran who was obedient to his king, promoted government through a strong well-trained bureaucracy with a hereditary monarchy at the top.

Bismarck had recognized early in his political career that the opportunities for national unification would exist and he worked successfully to provide a Prussian structure to the nation as a whole. On the other hand, his Reich of 1871 deliberately restricted democracy, and the anti-Catholic and anti-Socialist legislation that he introduced unsuccessfully in the 1870s and 1880s left a devastating legacy of distrust and fragmentation in German political culture.

THE PRINCELY HOUSE OF BLÜCHER von WAHLSTATT
Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, Fürst von Wahlstatt (German pronunciation: [ɡɛphaɐt lebəʁɛçt fɔn blyçɐ]; December 16, 1742 - September 12, 1819), Graf (Count), later elevated to Fürst (Prince) von Wahlstatt, was a Prussian Generalfeldmarschall (field marshal) who led his army against Napoleon I at the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig in 1813 and at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 with the Duke of Wellington. He is honoured with a bust in the German Walhalla temple near Regensburg. The honorary citizen of Berlin, Hamburg and Rostock bore the nickname "Marschall Vorwärts" ("Marshal Forwards!") because of his approach to warfare. There is a German idiom to this day, "ran wie Blücher" ("on it like Blücher"), meaning that someone is taking very direct and aggressive action, in war or otherwise.
