Kingdom of Denmark Kongeriget Danmark The Kingdom of Denmark (Danish: Kongeriget Danmark) is a constitutional monarchy and sovereign state consisting
the country of Denmark in northern Europe and two autonomous constituent countries, the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic
and Greenland in North America. The kingdom is a unitary state with some power being devolved from Denmark proper to Greenland
and the Faroe Islands; this polity is referred to as the Danish Realm. Denmark proper is the hegemonial area, where judicial,
executive, and legislative power resides. The Faroe Islands are defined to be a community of people within the kingdom, and
the Greenlandic people are defined as a separate people with the right to self-determination. Denmark is the southernmost of the Nordic countries, located southwest of Sweden and south of Norway, and
bordered to the south by Germany. The country consists of a large peninsula, Jutland and many islands, most notably Zealand,
Funen, Lolland, Falster and Bornholm, as well as hundreds of minor islands often referred to as the Danish Archipelago.  Denmark's history has particularly been influenced
by its geographical location between the North and Baltic seas. This meant that it was between Sweden and Germany and thus
at the center of the mutual struggle for control of the Baltic Sea; before the digging of the Kiel Canal, water passage to
the Baltic Sea was possible only through the three channels known as the "Danish straits". Denmark was long in disputes
with Sweden over control of Skånelandene (Scanian War) and Norway, and in disputes with the Hanseatic League over the
duchies of Schleswig (a Danish fief) and Holstein (a German fief). Eventually Denmark lost the conflicts and ended up ceding
first Skånelandene to Sweden and later Schleswig-Holstein to the German Empire. Denmark obtained Greenland and the Faroe
Islands in 1814 after the dissolution of a personal union with Norway, although the Danish monarchy, which had ruled over
both Norway and Denmark, had been in possession of the colonies since the fourteenth century. The Faroe Islands and Greenland
both became integral parts of the Danish Realm in the twentieth century and were granted home rule in 1948 and 1979 respectively. 
Denmark became a member of the European Union in 1973
but remains outside the Eurozone, while both Greenland and the Faroe Islands have opted to remain outside the EU entirely.
A founding member of NATO and the OECD, Denmark is also a member of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe
(OSCE). With a mixed market economy and a large welfare state, Denmark ranks as having the world's highest level of income
equality. The country has the world's seventh highest per capita income. It has frequently ranked as the happiest and least
corrupt country in the world. In 2011, Denmark was listed 16th on the Human Development Index and 2nd on the Corruption Perceptions
Index. The national language, Danish, is closely related to Swedish and Norwegian, with which it shares strong cultural and
historical ties. Denmark, along with Sweden and Norway, is part of the cultural region known as "Scandinavia" and
is also a member of the Nordic Council. House of Oldenburg The House of Oldenburg is a North
German dynasty and one of Europe's most influential Royal Houses with branches that rule or have
ruled in Denmark, Russia, Greece, Norway, Schleswig, Holstein, Oldenburg and Sweden. The current Queen of Denmark, the
King of Norway and the ex-King of Greece as well as consorts of Spain, Greece and the United Kingdom
belong to this House. It rose to prominence when Count Christian I of Oldenburg was elected King
of Denmark in 1448, and of Norway in 1450. The house has occupied the Danish throne ever since.
Marriages of medieval counts of Oldenburg had paved the way for their heirs to become kings of
various Scandinavian kingdoms. Through marriage with a descendant of King Valdemar I of Sweden and of King
Eric IV of Denmark, a claim to Sweden and Denmark was staked, since 1350. 
At that time, its competitors
were the successors of Margaret I of Denmark. In the 15th century, the Oldenburg heir of that
claim married Hedwig of Schauenburg, a descendant of Euphemia of Sweden and Norway and also a
descendant of Eric V of Denmark. Since descendants better situated in genealogical charts died
out, their son Christian (the abovementioned) became the king of all three kingdoms of the whole
Kalmar Union. The House of Mecklenburg was its chief competitor regarding the Northern thrones, and other aspirants
included the Duke of Lauenburg. Different Oldenburgine branches have reigned in several countries.
The House of Oldenburg was briefly poised to claim the thrones of England and Scotland through
the marriage of the Stuart Princess Anne (later Queen) to Prince George of Denmark and Norway;
however, following the early death of their only heir, Prince William, Duke of Gloucester, the
line of succession passed to the House of Hanover. 
The Family Titles and Styles The present members of this family bear the title Prince or
Princess of Denmark, together with the formal appellation of His or Her Highness, while the children of the monarch and of
the heir apparent enjoy the formal appellation of His or Her Royal Highness. By order of 27 Mar 1953 the succession to the
throne was limited to the issue of King Christian X. In 2008 the Queen announced that the members of the house descended
from her would bear the additional titles of Count and Countess de Monpezat. The
